SUNY Plattsburgh- Update and Scholarship Information for International Students

Again, SUNY Plattsburgh has been named among the top schools in the 2009 edition of "America's Best Colleges" by U.S. News & World Report, as well as one of the "100 best values" among public universities in the United States by Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine.  I am very proud that we received special recognition in U.S. News & World Report for our large and diverse international student enrollment.  As a matter of fact, we enroll approximately 400 international undergraduates (more than 7% of our total undergraduate population) from 60 countries.

International undergraduate applicants now have two options to apply for admission - the Common Application and the SUNY Plattsburgh International Undergraduate Application.  Links to both of these applications are available on our website:
Common Application -
https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/default.aspx

SUNY Plattsburgh International Undergraduate Application -

This summer, we began construction on a new, earth-friendly addition to Hudson Hall.  Housing the Center for Earth and Environmental Science and chemistry and physics programs, Hudson Hall is one of the two main science buildings on campus.  The new addition is slated for completion in 2012.

Furthermore, President Obama has named SUNY Plattsburgh Associate Professor of Biological Sciences Nancy Elwess a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.

For your students wanting to find out more about SUNY Plattsburgh through videos or social networking (okay ... maybe I'm getting too old for this job), here are links to our YouTube channel and Facebook page:

We use rolling admission so there is no specific application deadline, but we encourage completed applications by no later than April 1 for September entry and November 1 for January entry.  We begin reviewing applications for fall enrollment in November.  For the fall 2009 semester, we were "full" before May 15.

I look forward to hearing from you.  And I love *old-fashioned* email and phone calls!

National Academy of Sciences Fellowship Program
Below is information on a 12-week policy fellowship program at the National Academy of Sciences.  The fellowship introduces promising doctoral students (or post-docs) to the work of the National Academies, the primary science advising group for the federal government.
*Applications are due November 1st for the Winter/Spring session (February 3-April 28, 2010)*.
I’m currently participating in the program as part of the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education (DBASSE) Division and am happy to answer questions (or refer questions to the appropriate NAS staff) if you’re interested.

We're delighted to report that we have funding for two 12-weeks sessions in 2010 and are in search of well qualified applicants who may be interested in this hands-on S&T experience. You may also be interested in knowing that the Presidents approved a cost of living adjustment for 2010 and the stipend
grant is now $8240.

Please help us spread the word about the program.  We ask that you forward this "Call for Applications" to friends and colleagues who may be interested in this unique opportunity for themselves or to professors, department heads, and graduate programs that may be willing to pass it on to their students.
We plan to publicize this call for applications widely by way of an e-campaign.  Emails will be sent to individuals who submitted references on your behalf, but we ask that you contact them anyway.  An email from you with a personal note of endorsement will have more meaning and influence than the generic email from the program.

If you are a member of a professional society and have access to the listserv or can place the announcement on an e-bulletin, please consider doing so.  There are no better good will ambassadors than our current
Fellows and program alumni. Download a printer-friendly version of the announcement. Thanks for your help in getting the word out about the program.  Your efforts will help to attract candidates who have an interest in developing
basic skills essential to working or participating in science policy at the federal, state, or local levels.

With appreciation,
Anne-Marie and Rebecca
PS:  The deadline for receipt of application material is November 1st for the winter/spring session, so we'd be grateful for a quick assist!
PPS:  If you feel it would be beneficial to have copies our "12-weeks with Einstein" program flyer available at professional meetings or conferences you attend or may host in the future, please let us know; we will be happy to send a batch by FedEx.  Targeted campaigns are usually fruitful.

Questions should be directed to: policyfellows@nas.edu.
Below is a sampling of comments from alumni about the program's impact:
*"This is an important career building opportunity for people interested in the scientific community outside academia. Even if you plan to pursue a traditional academic track, seeing science from a policy perspective is very enlightening. There is something valuable in this experience for first year grad students to recent PhD's. Come with an open mind and expect to learn more than you imagined."
"This program will open your mind to a world rarely envisioned from the confines of laboratory bench work. I learned an immeasurable amount about the policy and politics behind science and after the fellowship opens your mind, it opens career doors."

"In just weeks in the S&T policy world in DC substantially broadened my perspective on how I can use my engineering background to positively impact
our society. I return to graduate school recharged about the value of advanced education, and more confident about my decisions to pursue studies that blend the boundaries of engineering and the humanities. By seeing the connections between your academic field and the public policy arena, you will find many new opportunities for future studies or careers. You will be enriched as a person, as a public citizen, and as a member of an academic community."

"A really great experience for those from the "soft sciences" who have an interest in S&T policy or if you're trying to figure out what else you might want to do outside of academia. This was a great opportunity to bridge the gap and gain a new understanding and appreciation for how it all works, the people involved, and the profound difference it can make in the end (and all long the way)."*
Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and those who have completed graduate studies or postdoctoral research in any social/behavioral science, medical/health discipline, physical or biological science, any field of engineering, law/business/public administration or any relevant interdisciplinary field within the last five years are eligible to apply.

POST-DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP AT THE AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY

Hench Post-Dissertation Fellowship at the American Antiquarian Society
Scholars who are no more than three years beyond receipt of the doctorate are invited to apply for the Hench Post-Dissertation Fellowship, a year-long residential fellowship at the American Antiquarian Society. The purpose of the post dissertation fellowship is to provide the recipient with time and resources to extend research and/or to revise the dissertation for publication. Any topic relevant to the Society's library collections and programmatic scope, and coming from any field or disciplinary background, is eligible. AAS collections focus on all aspects of American history, literature, and culture from contact to 1876, and provide rich source material for projects across the spectrum of early American studies. Our holdings include many collections that would be of use to environmental historians, including maps; landscape drawings, paintings, and photographs; local histories; and agricultural manuals and periodicals.

The Society welcomes applications from those who have advance book contracts, as well as those who have not yet made contact with a publisher. The twelve-month stipend for this fellowship is $35,000.
The Hench Post-Dissertation Fellow will be selected on the basis of the applicant's scholarly qualifications, the appropriateness of the project to the Society's collections and interests, and, above all, the likelihood that the revised dissertation will make a highly significant book.

Further information about the fellowship, along with application materials, is available on the AAS website.
Any questions about the fellowship may be directed to Paul Erickson, Director of Academic Programs at AAS, at perickson@mwa.org.

The deadline for applications for a Hench Post-Dissertation Fellowship to be held during the 2010-2011 academic year is October 15, 2009.
