University of Richmond
The University of Richmond, a nationally ranked liberal arts college with a top 20 business school, is pleased to offer scholarship opportunities equal to full tuition. 50 students in every first-year class, of which 10-12 are international candidates, are awarded a merit scholarship through the Richmond Scholars Program. Recipients have demonstrated extraordinary academic achievement, exceptional personal qualities and potential for ongoing contributions to society. Additionally,
the Presidential Scholarship rewards students who have achieved a superior high school record in a rigorous curriculum as well as outstanding standardized
test scores. The scholarship funding provides up to $15,000 per year for four years of undergraduate study at the University of Richmond. There also are partial scholarships available in areas ranging from art to community service. The Bonner Scholarship in particular rewards students who have been active in community and volunteer service. Richmond scholarships are either full tuition or full tuition, room and board. If a student receives the full tuition award, the remaining I-20 costs are room, board, books, supplies, personal expenses, which total $12,100. If a student receives tuition, room and board, the remaining I-20
costs are $4,900.
For over twenty years, the University of Richmond has demonstrated its commitment to internationalization through expanded international and culture-based course offerings, increased international student and scholar enrollment, and enhanced study, work and research programs abroad for students, faculty and staff. Most recently Richmond was named by Newsweek magazine as the hottest college in the nation for international studies and construction will begin this October on the Carole Weinstein International Center on campus, which will serve as a central location to coordinate Richmond's comprehensive approach to the internationalization of its educational programs and campus life.

Bowdoin College Mellon Global Environmental Scholar
The Mellon Global Environmental Scholars program aims to bring to Bowdoin experts in areas of Environmental Studies who add an international perspective to issues of interest among faculty and students at the College.
The scholar's background and expertise can be in any area of environmental concern, ranging across the natural sciences, the social sciences, the arts and humanities and environmental policy. While the program has a preference for scholars who reside outside the United States and are affiliated with a foreign university or research or policy institute, others with expertise in environmental fields in other countries may be considered. Scholars will be in residence at Bowdoin for one semester.
Bowdoin College is a small undergraduate liberal arts college located in Brunswick, Maine on the coast just north of Portland and two and a half hours north of Boston. The College has approximately 1650 students in residence and a faculty of over 165. Environmental Studies is an active College program with over 20 participating faculty, over 50 student majors and a strong commitment to strengthening the international dimensions of the program.
A main responsibility of the Mellon Global Environmental Scholar will be to interact with Bowdoin undergraduates both formally and informally. While in residence, the scholar will teach one course in an area related to his or her research interests. The scholar may also mentor undergraduate research projects on topics of mutual interest. The scholar will hold regular office hours and be willing to meet informally with students or give informal talks to student groups as interest is expressed. Lastly, as appropriate, the scholar may counsel students concerning opportunities to study abroad, either at the scholar's home institution or at other venues with which the scholar is familiar.
The scholar will also interact with Bowdoin's Environmental Studies faculty. Such interaction may include developing research projects with faculty who share common interests. As appropriate, scholars may be asked to consult with faculty on their ongoing research projects. The Mellon Scholar will also be expected to share his or her expertise with faculty through participation in the monthly faculty colloquium (Environmental Research Group). The scholar will also be available to consult with faculty who are interested in bringing international perspectives into their courses and serve as a guest lecturer in Environmental Studies core courses.
Lastly, the scholar will be invited to help organize a symposium focused on an environmental issue related to his/her expertise. The symposium will afford the Mellon scholar an opportunity to bring to Bowdoin experts from other institutions for exchanges that will enrich both the scholar's work and the Bowdoin community. Resources and staff support will be provided to facilitate this project. Bowdoin faculty and students will be involved in planning the symposium.
Bowdoin hopes the fellowship would lead to connections between the scholar's home institution and Bowdoin's Environmental Studies faculty. Such connections may lead to future two-way exchanges by faculty and students.
The stipend for the fellowship includes salary and benefits. There is an allowance for housing and the College will assist the scholar in finding suitable housing.
For further information about the College and the Program, please consult the College website and the Environmental Studies Program website.
The Environmental Studies Program welcomes inquiries from faculty with an interest in undergraduate teaching and building collaborative relationships with Bowdoin faculty. Persons interested in applying for the fellowship should email a letter of interest and a cv to the Director of the Environmental Studies Program, Phil Camill (pcamill@bowdoin.edu) and the program manager, Eileen Johnson (ejohnson@bowdoin.edu). For more information, please contact the program manager, Eileen Johnson.
Review of applications will begin in January 20, 2008.

Post Doctorate: The Environmental Fellows Program at Harvard
University, Cambridge, MA
The Harvard University Center for the Environment will name six new Environmental Fellows in April 2009. Their two-year post-doctoral program will start in September 2009. The fellows will join a group of remarkable scholars who will be beginning the second year of their fellowships. Together, the Environmental Fellows at Harvard will form a community of researchers with diverse backgrounds united by intellectual curiosity, top-quality scholarship, and a drive to understand some of the most important environmental challenges facing
society.
The award: The fellowship will provide an annual stipend of $54,000 plus health insurance, a $5,000 allowance for travel and professional expenses, and other employee benefits.
Application Deadline: January 15, 2009
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates should have received their terminal degree between May 2005 and August 2009. (Fellows must have completed all requirements of their degree before starting work in September 2009.)
Candidates with a doctorate or equivalent in any field are eligible, and they may propose research projects in any discipline. Applicants without a PhD may apply if they have studied in fields where the PhD is not the typical terminal degree. All successful candidates will be able to demonstrate experience performing scholarly research. Each candidate must secure a commitment from one or more Harvard
faculty members to serve as a mentor and to provide office or lab space for the two-year fellowship.
Harvard is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. The Center strongly encourages women and minorities to apply.
Candidates may have received their degrees at any university in the world. Foreign nationals are eligible for fellowships, though study at Harvard generally requires proficiency in English.
Candidates who received terminal degrees from Harvard, and post-docs currently working at Harvard are eligible for the fellowship provided their research and host arrangements take them in new directions and forge new connections within the University. Harvard candidates should not propose to continue to work with the same professors or lab groups with whom they are currently associated. No candidate should propose to work extensively with his or her thesis advisor.
Successful candidates should be prepared to commit to work at Harvard for the full two years of the fellowship.
Applicant's prior academic and professional success and his or her potential contribution to scholarship or practice. Project significance: the potential impact of the research project on scholarship at Harvard and on environmental problems. Diversity: The selection committee will select a group of fellows in 2008 who will
complement those selected last year, creating a group of approximately a dozen men and women with diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds and a diverse set of academic interests and skills. The ideal group would include fellows working with host faculty members at every one of Harvard's professional schools and many of the departments overseen by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Recipients-and hosts-may include people with degrees in the sciences, economics, law, government, public policy, public health, medicine, design, and the full array of humanities. Their research topics will be equally varied.
Interdisciplinary research projects are encouraged, although this is not a requirement for the fellowship. Candidates with interests in a single discipline are encouraged to apply.
Finding a Host:
Potential candidates should start early to identify and establish a relationship with a Harvard faculty member to host his or her research. The host will be a mentor to the fellow and will provide office space and basic administrative support. In agreeing to be a host, the faculty member is making a significant commitment.

Post Doctorate: Irvington Institute Fellowship Program of the Cancer
Research Institute, New York, NY
The Irvington Institute Fellowship Program of the Cancer Research Institute, formerly the Cancer Research Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, answers the need for more researchers in the field of cancer immunology. It supports qualified young scientists at leading universities and research centers around the world who wish to receive training in cancer immunology or general immunology.
A panel of 23 scientists drawn from our Scientific Advisory Council rigorously evaluates each candidate, the intended sponsor and training environment, and the nature and feasibility of the proposed project.
Eligibility
Applicants must have a doctoral degree by the date of award activation and must conduct their proposed research under a sponsor who holds a formal appointment at the host institution. Applicants with 5 or more years of relevant postdoctoral experience are not eligible, with the exception of M.D. applicants, who should not include years of residency in this calculation. Only in exceptional circumstances will applicants who have already spent 3 or more years in a sponsor's laboratory by the start date of fellowship be considered for a fellowship award. Work can be carried out in the United States or abroad but must take place at non-profit institutions. Only one fellow per sponsor may apply per application round, and faculty sponsors may not have more than three CRI-supported fellows at any time.
Award amount
The fellowship provides stipends of $45,000 for the first year, $47,000 for the second year and $49,000 for the third year. In addition, an allowance of $1,500 per year is allotted to the host institution for use at sponsor's discretion to help pay for the fellow's research supplies, travel to scientific meetings or health
insurance. Stipends and institutional allowances are not permitted to cover administrative expenses. Payments are made monthly in U.S. currency to the host institution.
Applications must be received by April 1 and October 1 annually; when those dates fall on the weekend, applications are accepted until the following Monday. Applicants are notified of fellowship decisions within approximately 10 weeks of the application deadline. Fellowships can be activated three months after the application deadline but no later than one year of the deadline. Awards activate
on the first of the month.
Applications are accepted in electronic format only. The application process requires you to download a PDF application form for institutional signature and certification. You must also submit an electronic application to CRI, during which you will be asked to upload supporting materials.
Also, CRI now designates at least two fellowship awards per round for projects with high relevance to cancer immunology. Applicants must indicate whether they wish to be considered for one of these cancer immunology postdoctoral fellowships and, if so, must provide a description of the relevance of their proposed project to cancer immunology. Applications that are not selected for a cancer immunology postdoctoral fellowship will be placed among the general application pool for consideration.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship Announcement Institute of International Studies
University of California, Berkeley
UC Berkeley's Institute of International Studies (IIS) welcomes applications for a 2009-2010 post-doctoral fellowship relating to the theme: Global Energy Transitions: The International Political Economy and Security Implications of a Shift Away from Fossil Fuels. IIS seeks a fellow whose research will contribute to the following question: What are the global political, economic, and security implications of a partial shift from fossil fuels to other energy sources? (biofuels, nuclear, other renewables)
The reigning assumption in policy circles is that reducing American dependence on fossil fuels would enhance America's freedom of action and be almost entirely a good thing from a geopolitical perspective. For example, it would reduce US dependence on authoritarian regimes, constrain funding for terrorist organizations, slow global climate change, and free up potentially dangerous transportation choke points around the world.
Is this conventional wisdom robust? For example, an alternative view is plausible: 'complex energy interdependence' of the type we have now constrains geopolitical action in desirable ways, re-distributes wealth in patterns that are stabilizing to the global economy, and creates shared interests among otherwise highly competitive great powers.
What is certain from previous historical experience is that global energy transitions - for example from coal to oil - had profound and long-lasting implications not only for global energy markets, but also for military and corporate strategy, environmental and economic policy, and ultimately, international politics.
The objective of this post-doctoral fellowship is to promote analytically sophisticated research that both questions assumed premises, and also evaluates other political, economic, and military consequences of such a shift - both intended and unintended.
IIS promotes interdisciplinary research in international, comparative, and policy studies on the Berkeley campus of the University of California. This post-doctoral opportunity is part of a broader project on the political economy of energy transitions, supported by the Energy Biosciences Institute (http://www.energybiosciencesinstitute.org/index.php).
UC Berkeley offers a unique environment to pursue this research agenda, as home to multiple institutes, departments, and programs devoted to the study of energy, environment, technological innovation, and international politics, including the Institute for International Studies, the Energy and Resources Group, the Institute of the Environment, and the Energy Biosciences Institute.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The post-doctoral fellowship will be for academic year 2009-2010 (nine-ten months).
The University of California, Berkeley is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to diversity in its staff, faculty, and student body, and invites all qualified people to apply, including minorities and women, veterans and individuals with disabilities.
Applications from all disciplines in the social science and humanities are encouraged.
Doctoral degrees must be in hand by August 15, 2009. Application packages should include a two-page CV, a transcript, two letters of recommendation, a two-page dissertation summary, and a five-page written statement. The statement should include your experience and interest in researching energy-related themes and/or working in energy policy, as well as a proposed research question(s), methodology, and publication goals for academic year 2009-2010.
Please mail complete application package (CV, transcript, dissertation summary and project statement) to the address below. We cannot review incomplete packages. The two letters of recommendation may be sent separately also to the address below.
