今秋よりアメリカ留学が決定している方々を対象とした「渡米前オリエンテーション」が6月18日（木）−（金）東京、６月27日（土）大阪で開催されました。

アメリカで教鞭をとっていらっしゃる教授による講演では、日によって内容も異なりましたが、教授が学生に期待することなど含め、お話し頂きました。英語での授業の雰囲気を少しは味わえたのではないでしょうか？？

つづいてのパネルディスカッションでは・・・
荷物はどのくらい持っていくの？
日本から持っていって良かったものは？パソコンは持っていくべき？
医療保険はどうするの？　
授業についていくコツ、宿題のこなし方　などなど
渡米前準備や渡米後の学業／生活面に関する皆様の疑問・質問を最近、帰国された留学経験者の皆様にお答え頂きました。

休憩時間には、参加者同士でネットワークを広げていただく場も提供させて頂きました。同じ州に行く人、同じ分野の人と皆様、交流を深めて頂けたようです。

休憩時間のあとには、アメリカ大使館/総領事館によるビザ説明会が行われました。すでにビザ取得されている方もいらっしゃいましたが、説明をきくことで、ビザ申請に関する疑問や不安がみなさん、解消されたようです☆

東京でのオリエンテーションの模様は、DVDに収録し、希望者に貸出をしておりますので、ご利用下さい。

CARROLL COLLEGE ANNOUNCES TWO NEW MAJORS: ENGINEERING MECHANICS AND COMMUNITY HEALTH/HEALTH SCIENCE

Carroll College, a small, Catholic liberal arts institution located in Helena, Montana is pleased to announce two new majors beginning fall 2009: Engineering Mechanics and Community Health / Health Science.
In addition to our new majors, Carroll will also begin to offer an environmental engineering emphasis within our Civil Engineering program.

Sierra College offers a wide selection of degree programs, on-campus housing, guaranteed transfer agreements to California universities, affordable tuition, structured ESL classes and a great campus location. Green river community college offers scholarships to new and continuing international students

Green River Community College, near Seattle, Washington is now offering scholarships for new and continuing international students.  Both tuition scholarships and work grants are available in amounts ranging from $250-$5,000 per student.

All students who have been granted admission to the program are eligible to apply for a scholarship.  A separate scholarship application must be completed and submitted to be considered for awards.  A letter and certificate will be mailed to those students who have been awarded scholarship and/or work grant funds.

2009年6月10日（水）慶應義塾大学日吉キャンパスで開催されました留学フェアに、留学情報サービスのスタッフも参加させて頂きました。

当委員会によるアメリカ留学説明会には、100名を超える学生さんが参加して下さいました。みなさん、非常に真剣な表情で説明を聴いて下さっていました。　

またブースにも約30名の学生さんが立ち寄り、様々な質問をして下さいました。

さて、EducationUSA Weekly Update　No. 133 （8th June, 2009）にPlagiarismに関する記事がありましたのでご紹介したいと思います。

"Plagiarism"の意味、ご存知ですか？
分からない方は、アメリカ留学関連用語集で調べてみましょう
「他人の考えや著作などを自分のものとして用いること。剽窃。アメリカでは重罪とみなされる。文献引用のしかるべき表記を行わなければならず、ときには出版物使用の許可を取り付けなければならない。」
 とあります。

日本では、曖昧にされがちな行為ですが、上記にもあるようにアメリカでは非常に厳しく扱われますので、剽窃の概念をよく理解しておきましょう。＿φ(・＿・”）

CROSS-CULTURAL DIFFERENCES IN PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism may be defined as taking another person's work and　presenting it as one's own, and is considered a very serious　infraction at U.S. universities. It is often described as the theft of　another's intellectual property. How can　international students　studying in the U.S.A. understand academic ethics within the context　of the U.S. American national culture? How does one learn the rules of　this culture?

In seeking to understand the U.S. American perspective on plagiarism,　one must first understand two commonly held U.S. American cultural　values: individualism and direct communication.

The cultural value of individualism requires students to respect the　rights of individuals whose ideas they have borrowed by clearly　distinguishing another's ideas from one's own and using an established　method for doing so.　Individualists also expect students not share　answers on an exam or even　discuss the questions with friends who may　need to take the exam at a later time in the day.

A second cultural value in the U.S.A. is direct communication. This　means that U.S. Americans prefer messages that are explicit and very　low in context. As an　example, clear expectations for academic　behavior are commonly found printed in university publications such as　a Student Code of Conduct, Honor Code, or　Institutional Statement on　Academic Integrity. The idea is that by providing　students with easy　access to the accepted standards of conduct, accidental violations of　academic ethics will be greatly reduced.

Before beginning classes, it is a good idea to search the website of　the institution one wishes to attend in order to locate and　familiarize oneself with academic expectations. After arrival, one　should be able to find many resources exist at the university for　helping students to avoid plagiarism. If unsure of how to properly use　citation styles, seek assistance from a professor, librarian or writing center staff (if applicable). If cultural values seem to pose　a challenge, speak with the international student advisor or a leader　of the international student community who is mature enough to provide　cultural insights.
