2013年10月29日に、University of North Florida (FL州）の、English Language Program のAlexis Branamanさん（写真左）とTia Riveraさん（写真右）が、フルブライト・ジャパンのオフィスを訪問してくださいました。

University of North Floria （以下UNFと表記）は、フロリダ州に11ある州立大学の一つで、Jacksonvilleという治安も良く住みやすい街にあります。ビーチが近く、Universal StudioやDisney Worldにも車で２時間ぐらいの場所だとか。

UNF は学生数約16,000名の中規模サイズながら、教授：学生数も、20：１と少人数教育。(University Profile)。学部課程には、58の学位プログラムがあり、中でも人気なのは、Transportation & Logistics、International Business, Music (Jazz), Coastal Biologyなど。

学部課程の授業料(Tuition and Fees)は、年間$16,560（年間留学経費（授業料、部屋代、食費、教科書代など全て込み）$32,755)で、Best Deal（※安価で良い教育施設がある）に選ばれたこともあるとか。留学生対象の奨学金はこちらを。

学部課程への入学には、高校時代の成績（GPA)、SAT（overall 1180以上）またはACT(overall 25以上)のスコア、英語能力証明（例：TOEFL　iBT 61以上)などが要求されていますので、早めの準備が必要です。（※SAT, ACTのスコア提出は州で義務付けられているそうで、留学生も提出が必須とのこと。）

施設はモダンで新しく、例えば、Student Union（学生会館）のオープンスペースには、毎週末、地元の商店などの出店が並び、まるでショッピングモールのようなにぎわいになるとか。写真を見せてもらいましたが、州立大学なのに、寮も個人部屋があったりプールがあるなど豪華で愕きました。

留学生は約300名で、場所柄、中南米からの学生が多く、アジアからの留学生は少ないそう。日本人は残念ながら現在、1人もいないそうで、ぜひ日本人留学生に来て欲しい！と熱いエールを送ってくれました。留学生対象の入学についてはこちらを。

ご報告が遅くなりましたが、2013年10月8日にCA州のCalifornia State University, Northridge（以下CSUNと表記）の、Vanessa Andradeさんとお目にかかる機会がありました。（写真が撮れずに申し訳ありません。）

Venessaさんは、CSUNのInternational Programs and Outreach Managerで、CSUNの留学生向けプログラムについて色々説明してくださいました。

CSUN は、23校あるCalifornia State Universityシステムの一つで、大学院も含め学生数約36,000人の大規模キャンパス。留学生は学生数の約５％で、日本人留学生が多い大学（学部課程）では第５位にランク。

Venessaさんからのお話で、一番印象に残った情報は、CSUNの1〜2学期のみ留学生が在籍できるプログラムです。

近年の日本人留学生の特徴として、non-degree（学位を取得しない、アメリカの大学を卒業目的ではない）で留学する学生の割合（パーセンテージ）が増えていることがあげられます。"non-degree"で留学希望する留学生向けに特化したプログラムというのは、なかなかありませんが、CSUNには、そのようなプログラムがあるそうです！

CSUNでは、2011年秋から、一学期間だけ留学できるプログラム（Semester at CSUN=SAC)を、留学生のみ対象で開設し、人気を博しているとか。現役の大学生・大学院生は、英語力の最低点（TOEFL 学部課程：６１点以上、大学院課程：７９点以上）とminimum GPAを満たしていれば、１学期間留学して、学科を問わず正規の授業が取れるそうです。 Semester at CSUN (SAC)について詳しくはこちらを。

通常、大学院ではnon-degree studentsを受け入れないものですが、ここは例外的！？　学部・大学院を問わず短期で留学して、自分の好きな正規の授業を受けたい学生さんには朗報ですね！しかも、自分の所属大学が協定を持っていなくても、誰でも自由に応募出来るシステム。

ただし、このプログラムでは１学期（※２学期まで延長可能）の留学が終われば、必ず元の自分の大学に戻ることが義務づけられ、途中で大学学部・大学院の学位取得コースに移ることは禁じられていますのでご注意。また、日米二重国籍の学生さんは、必ず事前に知らせる必要があるそうです。

もし英語力が十分でない留学生は、１学期英語学校 ＋１学期SAC  というパターンもありだとか。

短期で留学したい＋自分の好きな課目を履修したいという、最近の日本人のニーズを見事にすくい上げていて、感心しました。このようなプログラムを持つ大学がもっと増えると良いですね。

UG: INDIANA UNIVERSITY-PURDUE UNIVERSITY INDIANAPOLIS INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

IUPUI offers a wide range of merit and competitive scholarships. Merit scholarships are based on academic standings reflected in a completed application for both incoming freshman and transfer students.

These scholarships range from $10,000-$48,000 over two or four years depending on the scholarship.

Competitive scholarships require an additional application and admission into the Honors College. Recipients demonstrate academic excellence with global citizenship along with an outstanding academic performance and are awarded $64,000 over four years. Individual schools offer scholarships to international students as well.

UG: CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE MERIT AWARDS

$8,000-$20,000 per year! CLU offers merit scholarships to undergraduate international students. Apply for admission and you will be considered for these awards automatically.  Talent scholarships are also offered based on audition or portfolio for art, music and theatre arts.

UG: GEORGIA COLLEGE AND STATE UNIVERSITY MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS

Georgia College offers either full, out-of-state tuition waivers or half, out-of-state tuition waivers, which are awarded on the basis of demonstrated academic ability, evidence of extra-curricular involvement and financial need.  To be considered for the ISS, applicants must have on file a completed application for admission and completed ISS application by the stated deadline.

Grad/Postgrad: UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

University of New Mexico is a place where cutting-edge research and creative endeavors flourish.  Offering more than 215 degree and certificate programs, UNM has 87 bachelor's degrees, 72 master's degrees and 38 doctoral programs.  The International Amigo Scholarship entitles qualifying international students to a non-resident tuition waiver (value of more than $10,000 per year) and a cash award of $200 per year- provided a student meets renewal requirements. This means the student will pay only in-state tuition and other expenses.
