Keuka College was founded in 1890 and is located on the shore of Keuka Lake in New York state's Finger Lakes region. Keuka is a private, undergraduate and graduate, residential college that also offers bachelor's degree completion and master's degree programs through its Accelerated Studies for Adults Program and international programs in China and Vietnam.

Postgrad: The New School for Social Research Fellowships
The New School for Social Research provides an education grounded in history and informed by a legacy of critical thought and civic engagement. The school's dedication to academic freedom and intellectual inquiry reaches back to the university's founding in 1919 as a home for progressive thinkers and the creation of the University in Exile in 1933 for scholars persecuted in Nazi Europe. アメリカからの訪問者:Creighton University (NE)

2012年4月24日(水)に、Nebraska州のCreighton Universityから、Dr. Maria KraneとMs. Heather Torresがフルブライト・ジャパンのオフィスを訪問してくださいました。

Dr. Kraneは2007年の5月にもフルブライト・ジャパンを訪問してくださっており、今回で2度目です。5年ぶりに、日本からの留学生の動向や、最近の日本の事情を説明すると、興味深そうに聞き入っておられました。

Creighton University は、ネブラスカ州オマハにある、中規模の総合大学です。ネブラスカ(Nebraska)州がどこにあるかご存知ですか?詳しくは、こちらを。大学は、創立が1878年と歴史があり、キリスト教系、学生数は7,000人ながら50以上の学部専攻課程があり、20以上の大学院が併設されています。中規模にもかかわらず、Medical SchoolやLaw Schoolがあるのには驚きました。
キャンパスは、オマハのダウンタウンの真ん中にあり、都会と自然が融和した独特のたたずまい。ダウンタウンの中心なのに大きな池もあるそうです。Dr. Kraneは、PCで画面を見ながら説明してくださったので、まるでキャンパスを実際に訪問しているような臨場感がありました。

留学生は、世界40カ国から約250人。しかし、日本からの留学生は現在ゼロ(!)0だそうで、「日本人留学生に是非来て欲しい!昔はもっと居たのに、どうしてかしら?知名度がないから?もうやだ〜(悲しい顔)」と残念そうに語っていらっしゃいました。Creighton Universityは歴史的に、日本との縁も深く、大学の英語研修プログラムは、1970年代に日本人留学生を受け入れるために創設されたとか。留学生には英語の条件付き入学もあるそうです。

第一回EducationUSA主催 米国ロースクール説明会フェア

2013年4月9日(火)、EducationUSA主催、米国大使館、日米教育委員会共催で、『第一回米国ロースクール説明会フェア』が東京アメリカンセンターで開催されました。


9:00〜15:30までは、ロースクール留学についての各種セミナー、16:00〜19:00まではロースクール15校を迎えてのフェアが行われ、多くの方にご参加いただきました。またセミナーの模様は、ウエブ会議システムでも同時配信されました。


個人的に印象的だったのは、留学体験者の方々のパネルです。
バックグラウンドや留学時期が異なる4名の方々が、それぞれの留学に対する思いや経験を語ってくださり、改めて「留学は正解のない一人旅」なんだなあ、と思いました。

一日を通して、スピーカー、パネリストの方々、また参加者の方々からは、法律という分野への強い興味・愛(?)ハートたち(複数ハート)を感じました。
大学院で学ぶ、ということは、その分野に対する強い関心があること、学んでいてわくわくする気持ちがあること、が大前提なのですね。
言うまでもないことですが、改めて教えていただきました。


セミナー、フェアにご参加くださった皆様、ありがとうございました。

UG: The University of Iowa Summer Hawk Tuition Grants
The University of Iowa is a major national research university located on a 1,900-acre campus in Iowa City in southeast Iowa. Iowa is composed of 11 colleges, the largest of which is the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, enrolling most of Iowa's undergraduates. The Henry B. Tippie College of Business, the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and the Colleges of Education, Engineering, Law, Nursing, Pharmacy, enroll undergraduates, and with the Colleges of Dentistry and Public Health provide graduate education in conjunction with the Graduate College.

The Summer Hawk Tuition Grant provides a summer-session scholarship to undergraduate students who first enrolled at Iowa in Summer or Fall 2013 or after. No additional application is required. First-year, first-time students admitted for Summer or Fall 2013 are eligible to receive the grant during a single summer but must use it within four years of initial enrollment (no later than summer 2017) and before receiving an undergraduate degree. This is a nonrenewable, one-time award for up to 12 credit hours during a single summer.

アメリカからの訪問者:SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY

2013年4月15日(月)、California州の州立大学、SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY(SFSU)からDr. Jose L. GalvanとMr. Koichiro Aoshimaがフルブライト・ジャパンのオフィスを訪問してくださいました。

SFSUで学ぶ留学生の割合は、現在、全校生徒のうち約5%。この割合を倍にしたい!と、留学生受け入れにさらに力を入れているそうです。


IIE(Institute of International Education)の調査によると、SFSUは、日本人留学生の多い大学(大学学部課程)で第3位、4年制大学では第1位。日本人留学生に人気の理由には何があるのでしょう??


Dr. Galvanが、皆様へ以下、メッセージを下さいました。

「San Francisco State Universityは、留学生がはじめて降り立つ異国の場所として、soft landing(軟着陸)できる絶好の場所です。その理由は、Paul Simon Awardという国際的なアメリカの大学に対して与えられる賞を受賞したことからもお分かりいただけるように、留学生の受け入れ態勢が万全であるということが言えます。青島さんをはじめとする留学生アドバイザーが常勤しておりますし、また、留学生に対する奨学金制度もあります。英語研修プログラムももちろんあります。

留学生向けプログラムとしては、"The Study in San Francisco Program"というnon-degree(学位取得目的ではない/卒業目的ではない)学生向けプログラムを新設しました。夏の間だけ、または一学期間だけなど、アメリカの大学で勉強してみたいという方々にお勧めのプログラムです(正規の授業を受けるので、ある程度の英語力は必須)。短期留学をお考えの方なら、誰でも応募できます。

日本人留学生が多いということから、「アメリカに留学している日本人留学生を積極的に受け入れたい!」という日本企業が、SFSUを訪問して、個別に企業説明会を開催することもしばしばあるそうです。


また、日本人同窓会の規模が大きいことから、毎年夏に日本で同窓会を開いているそうです。その際、卒業生だけでなく、現役学生、これから留学する学生が一同に介し、情報交換をしているとか。OB、OGのお話を聞けるのは、就活にも役立ちそうですね。

「自分とは違う」と一線を引いてしまった事はありませんか?
ついつい自分と比べてしまった事はありませんか?
そして少し悲観的になってしまった時に、
自分と重なる部分があると親しみが一気に湧いてくると思います。

このような想いに至ったのには、
今関氏の話で気付かされた事の中にありました。
そして、この『気付き』はあらゆるシーンや事柄へと
繋がっていく事にも気付かされました。


今関氏よりお話いただいた内容には、
専門分野の情報も含まれていましたが、
非常にわかりやすく説明してくださいました。
一つ一つに説得力があり、聞き手は「なるほど」と
なっていたかと思います。これは、やはり今関氏の伝える力・
コミュニケーション能力にあるのではないでしょうか。


この力を磨くには、留学は良い手段になると思います。
なぜなら、留学とは専門分野の知識を身につけるだけでは
ありません。色々な国々の人と様々な価値観の中で勉強をし、
生活をします。これまでとは全く違った環境に身を置くことによって
他人を知る。自分を知る。自分を知ってもらう。
更には、自分を受け入れてもらう。他人も受け入れる。
そうなるには、コミュニケーション能力は欠かせません。
これを磨かなければ何も始まらないと今更かも知れませんが、
そう気付かされました。当たり前すぎて見落としていたり、
見えなくなっていたのかも知れません。


この『気付き』をビジネスシーンに置き換えてみます。

まず他人を知る事により、相手のニーズを把握できます。そして、
自分を知る事により提供可能なサービスを選出できます。
そこで何が一番最善なサービスかを磨かれた
コミュニケーション能力で、見極めます。

その他にも、もし業務フローに違和感を感じているのであれば、
具体的な『気付き』が必要となります。
現状(改善前)と描く未来(改善後)を明確にし、
何をどのようになぜ変えたいのか
的確に伝える事によって新たな道が拓けます。


この他にも気付かされた事がありました。
この朝活は、お話いただいた内容自体も大変勉強になりますが、
コミュニケーション・プレゼンテーション方法も学べます。
わずかな時間の中にたくさんの事が凝縮されています。
スタッフが気付いていない事もまだまだ埋もれています。
何を得たいのか、何を得るかはみなさん次第です。


ワクワクするような毎日を送るには、
まずは『気付く』ことに目覚め時計なければ
いけないのかもしれません。


朝は一分でも一秒でも長く寝ていたいものですが、
明日の朝は二分ゆっくりする分、
今日は一分頑張って早く起きて、

UG: Northwestern Michigan College Merit-Based Scholarships
Northwestern Michigan College is a publicly funded community college that serves people, organizations and businesses. We serve more than 50,000 learners annually throughout the Grand Traverse region and beyond. NMC offers associate degrees and professional certificates and, through our University Center, nine partner universities grant baccalaureate, graduate and doctoral degrees.

Northwestern Michigan College is offering scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year ranging from $500-$1000 to applicants with an equivalent 3.0 GPA or higher who complete an application by June 1, 2013.

UG: University of North Dakota National Science Foundation Scholarships
Founded on the principle that an outstanding liberal arts education is the basis of successful citizenship, UND is focused on teaching, research and creative and scholarly activity, and service to the state of North Dakota, nation, and world. Students matter at UND. It is a place where students research alongside renowned faculty and those same renowned faculty light up the classrooms.

The National Science Foundation has awarded to the University of North Dakota Science Team a grant to support a scholarship program to students in biology, chemistry, geography and mathematics. The program will provide financial support for up to 4 years (if renewal criteria are satisfied) covering tuition; fees with support of up to $10,000 a year, depending on the financial aid eligibility and qualifying to the selection/eligibility criteria.

UG: Monmouth College Merit-and Need-Based Scholarships
Monmouth College, a residential liberal arts college located in the beautiful, safe and affordable Midwest, warmly welcomes international students, including transfer students.

There is no application fee, and admitted students are automatically considered for merit scholarships (of up to $21,000 per year) - there is no additional application required. With proper documentation, students will also be considered for financial-need-based aid (approximately $5,000 per year). The total cost to the student next year (including room, board, travel, books, and health insurance) will be approximately $13,000 per semester. We require TOEFL or IELTS; SAT scores may be substituted for the language proficiency scores, but we do not require SAT scores.

UG/Grad: Smith College Summer Program Scholarships
Smith College's summer programs are offering multiple $1500 scholarships for its "American College Internship Program" which runs from July 7-August 3, 2013.

The program offers 15 hours each week of ESL, American culture and history classes, as well as academic writing and public speaking courses. We will tour other college campuses, such as Harvard, M.I.T., Amherst, Middlebury, NYU, to name a few. We will also help you select undergraduate and graduate programs to apply to. This program will help you succeed in an American classroom! Applications are due April 26th.
